Collage-Taylor (1875-1912): Piano quintet Op.1, Clarinet quintet Op.10, Ballad for violin and piano Op.73

Performance: Nash Ensemble
Collage Taylor was an English composer, his father was a black doctor in Sierra Leone, Africa, and his mother was British. He studied composition by Stanford at the Royal College of Music, and gained fame for his epic trilogy by Longfellow. In the United States, he was also called'Black Mahler', and his creative talent is evident in instrumental music with a brilliant tone. This bright and upbeat album is a rare chamber music piece by Collridge-Taylor, and is an intellectual and passionate, ambitious piece by the Nash Ensemble, recently recognized as a chamber music piece by Saint-Saens (CDA67431/2). In particular, the charm of the mysterious yet rhythmic clarinet quintet is even phenomenal. (CDA67590)
